What we do

Serving our Community, One Delivery at a Time

At Blood Bike North West, we provide a vital, free-of-charge medical transport service, ensuring urgent medical supplies reach those who need them most. From life-saving blood and chemotherapy treatments to critical lab specimens and donor breast milk, our dedicated volunteers work around the clock to support hospitals, nursing homes, laboratories, and families across the region.

We operate out-of-hours during weekdays and offer 24-hour coverage on weekends and public holidays, including Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. Our service is entirely volunteer-run and funded by generous donations, allowing us to continue making a difference in our community.

All of our volunteer riders have gone through extensive training and have achieved advanced riding qualifications from either RoSPA or The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM).

In everything we do, the safety of our menbers and those we serve is of key importance

Here’s a closer look at the essential items we transport:

BLOOD SAMPLES

Timely and accurate testing of blood samples is crucial for diagnosing medical conditions, monitoring treatments, and making life-saving decisions. Our dedicated volunteers ensure that blood samples are transported swiftly and securely between hospitals, laboratories, and healthcare facilities, helping to facilitate rapid diagnoses and effective patient care.

BREAST MILK

For premature and sick infants, donor breast milk can be a lifeline. We work closely with neonatal units to safely transport human milk from donor banks to hospitals, ensuring vulnerable babies receive the nutrition they need for a healthier start in life.

CHEMO DRUGS

Cancer patients rely on a strict treatment schedule to fight their illness effectively. We provide a rapid and secure transport service for chemotherapy medication, ensuring it reaches patients on time so their treatment remains uninterrupted.

LAB SPECIMENS

Timely testing of lab samples is essential for accurate diagnoses and effective treatment. We handle the urgent transport of blood samples, biopsies, and other medical specimens between hospitals, laboratories, and healthcare providers, helping facilitate quicker medical decisions.

More About the Human Milk Bank

The Human Milk Bank is a service operated by the team at the Southwest Acute Hospital in Enniskillen, County Fermanagh and provides this vital and ever-growing service throughout all of Ireland.

The video below shows how this breast milk is donated, treated and dispatched to over 27 Neo-Natal Units all throughout Ireland. It also shows the key role played by Irish Blood Bike Groups in the collection of donated breast milk and the redistribution of treated breastmilk to wherever it is needed.
